  • Seeds. e.g Wheat Berries/Rye/Barley
  • Soil
  • Soil/Compost for seeds.
  • Trays. Hard plastic drip trays are practical. But any tray will do fine.

just like the seeds

Down they go, inside they go, deep into darkness and the soil they go. Away from light. Away from the other seeds. Making an inner journey. Alone. But with awareness of other seeds around, some doing the same prep, some still in the bag, some not even knowing they are a seed. Dwelling there for a bit, not much to do. Then, when it seems to be a good day, breaking the seed shell. Readiness is there to sprout and head for the sunlight. Day by day the transformation is taking place. Humans are just like seeds. To bring out the uniqueness of oneself, one has to jump into the mud, enter darkness, absorb nutrition. Then, transform to the wholeness of self. There is more to life than being a seed. We can sprout, expand and head for a greater expression of light! But as we know, down into the mud we have to go. Just like the seeds.

the growing process, day by day

about the seeds

The seeds to get is called wheat berries or hard winter wheat. At 70% humidity and 70F/21C wheat seeds has a shelf life of 2 years. Store the seeds in a dark, dry and cool place. Any grass (Barley, Rye) can be juiced. But wheat grass is something special! It's flavor is also very sweet.

day 1

May 4th. SOAK SEEDS. Soaking seeds over night, to awaken and prepare the seeds to germinate. Approx 12 hours.

day 2

May 5th. RINSE, DRAIN AND GERMINATE. 3 X DAY: Rinsing and draining. The seeds are drained well before they go back in tray. Keeping a lid (another tray up side down) over the tray to prevent the seeds to dry. Many seeds needs darkness during the germination process. Wheat grass seeds are tolerant and will germinate either way. A tiny little root will be visible before the day is over.

day 3

May 6th. GERMINATING
Rinsing and draining. 2-3 times/day. Keeping the lid on, air needs to come through. The root is now visible and growing rapidly. One can also use sheets from a newspaper as a lid.

about the soil

Use soil/compost for seeds. Soil for flower pots are heavier and stronger, the roots will get burnt if using ordinary soil. No need for fertilizer. It's a good idea to have the compost bag avaible in a practical way. Mine is in the kitchen. Part of the lifestyle. One gets used to a huge bag of soil indoors quite fast.

day 4

May 7th. SEWING DAY.The seeds are rinsed and drained well. I use less then 1" / 2.5 cm soil. More like half an inch/1.25cm.

More soil = less time watering
Less soil = more time watering

Wheatgrass does not need much soil to grow. The roots are developing very satisfyingly!

day 5

May 8th. The tray is covered and seeds are sprayed with water. Now it's Coffee time! As the only thing to do today, is to spray in the evening.

day 6

May 9th. The grass has popped during the night! It's called gravitropism. A seeds natural navigation system to be able to navigate and orient itself in a tray or elsewhere. In the germination process the roots are going down and the shoots are going up. Now and then, I do wonder if I got any natural gravitropism system within.

day 7

May 10th. Today we can call it grass.

day 8

May 11th. The Grass is growing faster then the speed of light!

day 9

May 12th. Well, It might not be so very obvious, but it's taller and just more grass in the tray. I will redo this process later. Redo with an angle plan for the camera/tray. But as one can see we have had SUNSHINE in the morning two days in a row. Around noon rain and thunder. Rain in the evening. That was a weather report as there is not much to say about the grass more than it is growing.

day 10

May 13th. Growing nicely. But needs another day to be ready to juice. It has been a cold and rainy week. I have new seeds (Barley) to sew tomorrow and I will do one close up photo and one whole tray photo. I always wanted to capture a seeds developing process. A photo every 12 hrs or so. Tomorrow juice time!

a wild one

Even if we are waiting for another day to harvest and make juice. We don't want the grass to be over grown like this! This tray, from this morning (13th), has gone wild. The peak of nutrition has been reached 2-3 days ago and are now going downhill...The dark green healthy fresh grass is becoming more yellowish. Half the tray has been juiced during the day. The other half, first thing to juice tomorrow.

just before harvest

May 14th. Before juicing lets check the grass from above, underneath and the side. One can see the root mat has had too little oxygen due to too much water as the roots are brownish in color. The grass has now it's optimal nutritional value and is ready to be juiced. To harvest, cut the grass just above the compost surface. Quick rinse, juice the grass and drink it in a flash.

juice time! light energy transformed to chlorophyll

May 14th. The grass is juiced and floating in my veins. This grass was very very sweet. More than usual. Super Tasty! Back in history, in Sweden at least, picking nettles and birch leafs (when they are at the size of a mouse ear) in early spring, was the method to keep people healthy. Both are two blood cleaners. Wheat grass is known to be an excellent blood cleaner and blood builder. (More about that in another post.) I was picking nettles during March here in York. Drank fresh tea daily. I picked as much nettles to last me the whole year. There is a saying; You are only as young, vital and healthy as your blood is clean. Or something like that. I believe that. This is one reason I drink wheat grass juice; to keep my blood clean. Please Enjoy a cup of fresh juice! I will keep refilling it! (I drink it in small Spanish coffee cups!)
